This is a neat idea I had for everyone today so I'm going to run with it. I've decided to have a contest similar to the insecure.org top security tools list.

So here is what you do:

Reply to this thread with what platforms you use, and a top 10 or so list of tools you use in the following categories:

Security

Networking

Misc

If you can't name a full 10 for each don't worry. The top security tools should actually be related to security in some way. For example Nmap and Firewalls you may use.

The Networking tools should be actual network tools, like IP Sorcery, Hping, Ethereal, and iptraf.

Misc is for apps you use every day that you can't live without. Like XMMS, Mutt, PowerPoint, Vim, Emacs and so on, and don't have much to do with security or networking so to speak.

I'll leave this open for everyone for a while so everyone has a chance to reply with their picks, and then I'll go over each reply and each tool and make a list of the top 10 or so, and if this gets really big with a lot of replys, then well, I'll make it a top 30 or so.

Then you all can vote on the tools listed you like the best and the "winner" can... Have some APs from me or something.

If you use more than one OS, make sure to make two lists if the apps aren't cross platform.

At the very end I'll do a write up of the tools listed and submit it to Jupiter for examination and maybe publishing if they like it.

So Have fun,

gore.
