Some of the smiley's have "trigger codes" without the encapsulating colons, such as the cold one. I typed that without ::'s bracketing it, and it was replaced with a smiley. (In other words, I wrote out the word c-o-l-d, just as I would when not intending to have a smiley, instead of writing :-c-o-l-d-: ) There are a few others on the list near the end. Anyway, this causes the smileys to appear at unexpected times.
